MOCA GA Branches Out Into Downtown Atlanta:

The cultural revitalization of downtown Atlanta takes another step forward on Monday, when a new branch of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA) will open at SunTrust Plaza, a property jointly owned by SunTrust Banks Inc. and Portman Properties Inc.

MOCA GA at SunTrust Plaza will expand community awareness of Georgia art and artists and will enable the museum to reach a broader audience. The new branch of MOCA GA joins a growing list of cultural attractions including Theatrical Outfit's Balzer Theatre, the Georgia Aquarium and the new World of Coca-Cola that are revitalizing downtown.

MOCA GA President and CEO Annette Cone-Skelton credits the collaboration with SunTrust and Portman Properties for making the new venue possible.

SunTrust and Portman Properties commitment to downtown Atlanta has created a unique opportunity for MOCA GA to expose audiences to Georgia art and artists, Cone-Skelton said. These two highly regarded Atlanta institutions wanted to create exhibitions, programs and events for the public that promote the art of Georgia. We welcome the chance to join them in that endeavor.

The addition of MOCA GA at SunTrust Plaza doubles MOCA GA's exhibition space. MOCA GA will mount four exhibitions each year in the new location.

The first of these exhibits, MOCA Majors, features major works from the MOCA GA collection. Radcliffe Bailey, Beverly Buchanan, Herbert Creecy, James Herbert, E.K. Huckaby, Todd Murphy and Rocio Rodriguez will be among the artists represented. The new exhibit will open Monday and continue through Feb. 19. An opening reception will be Jan. 27 from 5 to 7 p.m.

[The new location] is a way to introduce the downtown community to the rich diversity of MOCA GA's growing collection, said Cone-Skelton. The partnership is such a natural fit for us. MOCA GA's permanent collection began as a corporate collection. In fact, the second exhibit in the space, FOCUS: Diversity in Corporate Collections, pays tribute to the corporate community's vision for the arts. This exhibition will include important works found in corporate collections around the metropolitan Atlanta area.

The partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to a thriving cultural community and desire to make the gallery a stronger community asset, said Raymond King, SunTrust's senior vice president for community and government affairs. We are happy to support MOCA GA in realizing these goals, and we look forward to the coming year of exhibitions.

MOCA GA's mission is to collect and archive significant works of artists living in Georgia. MOCA GA seeks to make contemporary visual art more accessible by connecting local, living artists with diverse audiences in order to promote the understanding and appreciation of the visual arts in Georgia.

MOCA GA at SunTrust Plaza is at 303 Peachtree St., where Peachtree Street and Peachtree Center Avenue intersect. Museum hours will be Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The new location also will be open for downtown Atlanta's First Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. Admission will be free.

MOCA GA's base of operations will continue to be at 1447 Peachtree St., two blocks north of the High Museum of Art. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
