Corey Barksdale was born in Nashville, Tennessee into a family of Artists. He was exposed to color and form at an early age by his grandmother a quilt artist, and his mother who was gifted with an intuitive feeling for design and a fastidiousness for detail which she expressed in all aspects of her daily life. This rich beginning is the root of Barksdale's creative expression.

The 2008 Decatur Arts Festival is an annual, award-winning celebration of the arts in Decatur, Georgia. The festival is in its 20th year, and takes place during Memorial Day weekend (May 24 and 25, 2008.) During this time, a large, outdoor, juried artist market turns downtown Decatur and the Old Courthouse Square into a hub of activity, attracting an estimated 70,000 visitors over the two days. Other attractions include a musical stage, a children's area, the Literary Arts tent, artist demonstrations, and the concurrent Decatur Film Festival, Decatur Fine Arts Exhibition, and the Friday night Speak...Easy. Memorial Day Weekend May 24-25
Decatur's biggest arts event kicks off with the unveiling of the official arts festival poster and culminates with the main events on Memorial Day Weekend.

Poster Unveiling May 1 5-7 p.m. Be one of the first to see the special Arts Festival poster. Artist will be on hand to sign copies.

Decatur Civic Chorus Concert May 18 3 p.m. The Decatur Civic Chorus opens the festival week with a fabulous concert. First Baptist Church of Decatur, 308 Clairemont Ave.

Fine Arts Exhibition Opening Reception May 20 5-7 p.m. Dalton Gallery at Agnes Scott College. Fine Arts Exhibition features a juried show with a diversity of fine art. Free.

ArtWalk May 23 5-10 p.m. Over 28 participating galleries & shops feature special art and artists and receptions in each location.

Ten galleries One pleasant stroll Four times a year

Make plans to attend the four Decatur ArtWalks featuring Decatur galleries. The ArtWalks are modeled on the popular Decatur ArtWalk that is part of the Decatur Arts Festival every year.

The next ArtWalk is Friday, Feb. 8, 5-10 p.m. Many of the participating galleries are within walking distance of each other. Others are just a short bike, scooter, or car ride away and parking is available at each.

Decatur ArtWalk offers a mix of fine art, jewelry, crafts, folk art, paintings, photography, glass, prints and more. The galleries are all located within the four mile-square Decatur city limits. Parking is plentiful and most locations can be visited on foot.

College Heights Silent Auction

College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center will hold its first ever silent auction on Friday, March 7, from 6 to 9 pm at Palate Caf and Wine Bar in Decaturs Oakhurst neighborhood to benefit the school and its programs.

College Heights offers early learning programs for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and Pre-K students through a unique partnership with City Schools of Decatur, Metro Atlanta YMCA and Partners for Community Action (Heat Start Program). The school, located at 917 S. McDonough St., in Decatur, currently serves 246 students.

6th Annual Oakhurst Wine Crawl
Feb. 23 4-7 p.m.
The neighbors and local businesses of Oakhurst present the 6th Annual Wine Crawl in the Oakhurst Village. The event is a celebration of the Oakhurst community and will feature wines from around the world as selected by two local Oakhurst residents. Participating local Oakhurst businesses will each feature a different wine selection to taste. Participation limited to 750. Tickets are $20.

AJC Decatur Book Festival
Friday-Sunday, Aug. 29-31
Activities include authors readings, lectures, book signings, discussion panels, a writers conference, poetry slam, book sales, cooking demonstrations, and activities for children, including a parade.

Beach Party
Friday, June 20 5 p.m.-midnight
Decatur brings in 60 tons of sand and turns the square into a beach for this annual event. Live music, boardwalk games, beach movie and more!

Tickets: Adults $10; Purchase in advance for $5 each. Children 12 and under free (limit two per paying adult).

No coolers, glass or pets allowed in the Beach Party area.

Sponsored by the Decatur Business Association. Proceeds benefit downtown improvement projects and DBA events.

Anne Frank Exhibit at the Old Courthouse

Anne Frank in the World: 1929-1945 is on exhibit at the Old Court House on the Square and is open to the public. The exhibit contains more than 600 photographs. Tours include a video, The Short Life of Anne Frank.

The exhibit is is presented by DeKalb County, the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust, and the DeKalb History Center. It is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Sundays, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Volunteers help bring the story and lessons of the Holocaust and Anne Frank to life. No experience is needed to become a volunteer and all training is provided.
